Why We Hold Onto Clutter & How To Let It Go

We all have stuff that we keep, no matter how much clutter it creates or how dysfunctional our homes become. It is often the items with sentimental value that are the most difficult to part with: mementos of a special event, childhood memories, and sometimes even reminders of past relationships. These things represent more than simply objects; they mark transformation in our lives and remind us of a promise made long ago.

Sometimes it can be very comforting to hold onto these items – they bring back memories of good times and fond people who have come and gone. They allow us to reminisce on the past and provide solace during hard moments in life when we need to be reminded that time will pass once again. However, keeping too many belongings can create an unhealthy obsession with the past that prevents us from looking forward into our future.

Letting go of possessions can be a difficult process. It is often hard to detach yourself from the material items that have been with you for an extended period of time. In my own experience, I’ve had to learn how to let go of even the smallest items that take up space in my life, as it allows me more time and energy to focus on what really matters.

The act of letting go starts with understanding why it can be beneficial. We attach labels such as nostalgic or sentimental value to physical objects without realising it, which makes this process even harder to do. Instead, we should reframe our mindset and think about how freeing it will be when we ditch the clutter from our lives that no longer serves us or brings us joy.

In order to move forward and make space in our life and mind, I always recommend you begin by decluttering. Decluttering can be one of the most difficult and intimidating tasks, but it can also leave you feeling a sense of accomplishment and peace. Whether it’s a physical item or emotional baggage from the past, learning to let go is essential for personal growth. It may not always be easy but it is something that everyone should strive for.

To begin with, take some time to reflect on what items you have in your possession and why you are keeping them – does it serve any purpose or does it bring back memories? Once you identify these items, create three piles; keep, donate/sell, and throw away. Keeping only what we truly need around us will open up more space both physically and mentally leading to more calmness in our lives.

Another great way to let go of physical items is to create a photo book. Simply snap some pictures of the items you are discarding or donating, and create a digital or printed photo book, which takes up little space and you will have it to look at and enjoy for years to come!

Admitting that we do not need to keep everything can be a challenge. However, if you start slowly with one item at a time, the process of letting go of the physical item will only get easier.
